Lights ablaze wherever you look in Weimar, the scent of fire sprigs, gingerbread and roast almonds: According to CNNGo the world’s best Christmas market is found in Weimar. Weimar has thereby knocked Christmas market cities such as Strasbourg, Edinburgh, Chicago and Karuizawa off of top spot. The Christmas market in the UNESCO city of Weimar stretches out from the historic Marktplatz through the pedestrian zone and up to the famous Goethe and Schiller monument on Theaterplatz. The Marktplatz with The Fountain of Neptune provides a magnificent setting for the festively decorated stalls, which feature everything the pre-Christmas period can offer. There will of course be Thuringian specialities such as sausages, but also glassware from Lauscha or carvings from the Ore Mountains. Putting up Christmas trees has a long history in Weimar. A Christmas tree was put up in public for the first time in 1815 (still in Goethe's time) on Weimar’s Marktplatz by Hoffmann, the court bookseller, for the city's impoverished children.
|The renowned Christmas carol ‘O du fröhliche’ also originates from Weimar and was composed by Johannes Daniel Falk. During Weimar’s advent concerts you will frequently hear renditions of this song. The anticipation of the Christmas festival is just as enjoyable as the festival itself. The story tent at Tasifan children’s circus with its daily changing itinerary should help to shorten the wait up to Christmas day. In addition to all this, the Town Hall transforms itself into a colourful advent calendar and every day Father Christmas opens one of its little doors with the children.|
